Basalt Frame

This frame was inspired by the repetition and geometry found in basalt stone formations. These formations have an incredible variety of shadows, which was something I wanted to explore in wood.
Each frame is composed of 24 individually carved pieces of sugar maple, separated by thin lines of shadow. The process is mostly intuitive and reactive: I will carve one piece with a series of forms, which often sparks an idea for its neighbor. From there, it’s a joy ride of following shapes and shadows through the frame, making adjustments and additions as needed.
Hand made and finished in Portland with sugar maple.
